Barrett M107A1 Special Application Scoped Rifle

Model M82A1/M107

Barrett's M82 was developed and built by Ronnie Barrett in 1982.  At the time, it was a revolutionary weapon without peers that started a whole new category in the modern battlefield:  a lightweight, semi-automatic, shoulder fired, .50 caliber anti-materiel rifle, capable of disabling and/or destroying lightly armored targets at distances of 1,800 meters or more.

Although originally not intended for pinpoint accuracy,  it later proved extremely effective in the first Gulf War and later conflicts.  In 2004, Marine SSgt. Steve Reichert engaged and killed enemy insurgents in Lutafiyah, Iraq at distances as far as 1,614 meters, a record at the time.   In the same incident, he manage to take out a machine gun team of 3 insurgents that took cover behind a brick wall using the Raufoss Mk211 armor piercing incendiary round.

The M82A1/M107 is currently in service with all branches of the U.S. military.  It is a semi-automatic, recoil-operated, magazine fed rifle that comes standard with a chrome-lined barrel and components such as the receiver and butt-stock made out of steel.


Model M107A1 

Although successful with the M82A1/M107 model, Barrett worked on improving its capabilities and this year they announced the successor as the new M107A1.  Not only is it lighter, but they added a proprietary sound suppressor that is easy and quick to attach and detach.  These are the highlights as published by Barrett:



It may be related to the Model 82A1®/M107®, but the M107A1 is far from a simple evolution. Driven by the demands of combat, every component was re-engineered to be lighter yet stronger. The result? A high-performance rifle that weighs four pounds less than the original M107, but is every bit as tough.

Designed to be used with a suppressor, this one-of-a-kind rifle allows you to combine signature reduction capabilities with the flawless reliability of the original Barrett® M107. An all-new bolt carrier group has been designed that is key to making the rifle suppressor-ready. its titanium four-port muzzle brake is engineered to work seamlessly with a quick-attach Barrett .50 BMG Suppressor.

The lightweight aluminum upper receiver features an integrated, rigid 27 MOA optics rail. Inside the upper receiver, the bolt carrier rides on a hardened steel, anti-wear strip for added durability. A thermal-guard cheek piece protects the user’s face from extreme heat or cold.

Advanced design and manufacturing make the M107A1 more precise than ever. The rear-barrel stop and front-barrel bushing are bolted and bonded with a compound similar to that used on space shuttles. A titanium barrel key and fully chrome-lined bore and chamber add to the rifle’s durability.

Enhanced modularity is also a key feature. The rifle’s rail-mounted aluminum rear grip can easily be reconfigured. The newly designed titanium and polymer monopod is easily adjustable from either side.

The M107A1 rifle’s lower receiver includes a new aluminum recoil buffer system that’s optimized for use with a suppressor. The bolt carrier’s components are protected with a mix of ultra-hard PVD coatings and advanced nickel Teflon® plating that increases lubricity, is corrosion-resistant and greatly eases cleaning.

Numbered witness holes on the magazine are just another example of how even the smallest detail makes a powerful difference.

Barrett MRAD (Multi-Role Adaptive Design) Long Range Sniper Rifle

The MRAD (multi-role adaptive design) is a refinement of Barrett's 98B rifle.  It was designed specifically to compete for SOCOM's Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) program for a long range rifle.
The MRAD is a bolt action rifle and has a monolithic upper receiver of aluminum alloy (7000 series) with a full length picatinny rails on top (21.75 in.) and side and bottom attachment points for user-configurable rails.  It has a folding stock with adjustable length of pull and cheek piece.  The trigger assembly is built in a module and can be removed and replaced without tools.  The bolt-action is self-lubricating and designed to keep the action clean.  The safety/selector can be configure for left or right hand use.   It has a standard 10 round double stacked, detachable magazine and ambidextrous magazine release.

The MRAD is chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum, with a suppressor-capable match-grade stainless steel barrel which can be removed in the field quickly with a simple tool and configured to other calibers such as the .300 Win. Mag. or 7.62x51mm.  It is designed to shoot at least 1.0 MOA (minute of angle) at 1,500 meters which is a requirement for the PSR.  The MRAD, with the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is able to shoot very, very far.   Kyle Lynch, who has been intimately involved with the development of this rifle, has shot it at 2,340 yds (approx 2,140 meters) with factory ammo, that's an incredible 1.33 miles!  A quantum leap compared to the current military sniper cartridge, the 7.62x51mm, which can be effective at 1,000 yards.

Another critical specification requirement of the PSR is that the weight shall not exceed 18 lbs.  It's a tall order considering the caliber, but the MRAD weights in at 14 lbs. 8 oz., which is a pound lighter than the nearest competitor according to Kyle Lynch.  All in all, the MRAD is a very impressive long range rifle system and I think it stands a very good chance of taking the prize as SOCOM's new PSR.

The MRAD rifle’s user-changeable barrel system is just one example of this hardworking gun’s modularity. The precision-grade barrel can be removed by simply unscrewing two bolts using a standard Torx wrench. Besides reducing maintenance and logistical burdens, this unique design paves the way for future caliber interchangeability and serviceability.
The MRAD also boasts Barrett’s new easily accessed trigger module. This match-grade trigger is drop-fire-proof and combat-ready. The thumb-operated safety can be configured for left or right hand operation. The ambidextrous magazine release can be used intuitively while retaining a firing grip and cheek weld.
Integrated into the MRAD rifle’s 7000 series aluminum upper receiver is an M1913 rail with 30 MOA taper and 21.75 inches of rail space. The configurable side and bottom rails can also hold a number of accessories.
The MRAD rifle’s stock is foldable for enhanced portability yet locks in as solid as a fixed-stock rifle, creating a rigid platform for consistent firing. When folded, the stock latches around the bolt handle for added security during transport. Because the stock folds to the bolt handle side of the action, the rifle is the same width overall, folded or extended.
Made of a temperature-resistant polymer, the adjustable cheek piece also offers a consistent rifle-to-user contact point. The rifle’s length of pull can be set to five different positions with the push of a single button.
