Barrett M107A1 Special Application Scoped Rifle

Model M82A1/M107

Barrett's M82 was developed and built by Ronnie Barrett in 1982.  At the time, it was a revolutionary weapon without peers that started a whole new category in the modern battlefield:  a lightweight, semi-automatic, shoulder fired, .50 caliber anti-materiel rifle, capable of disabling and/or destroying lightly armored targets at distances of 1,800 meters or more.

Although originally not intended for pinpoint accuracy,  it later proved extremely effective in the first Gulf War and later conflicts.  In 2004, Marine SSgt. Steve Reichert engaged and killed enemy insurgents in Lutafiyah, Iraq at distances as far as 1,614 meters, a record at the time.   In the same incident, he manage to take out a machine gun team of 3 insurgents that took cover behind a brick wall using the Raufoss Mk211 armor piercing incendiary round.

The M82A1/M107 is currently in service with all branches of the U.S. military.  It is a semi-automatic, recoil-operated, magazine fed rifle that comes standard with a chrome-lined barrel and components such as the receiver and butt-stock made out of steel.

Model M107A1

Although successful with the M82A1/M107 model, Barrett worked on improving its capabilities and this year they announced the successor as the new M107A1.  Not only is it lighter, but they added a proprietary sound suppressor that is easy and quick to attach and detach.  These are the highlights as published by Barrett:

It may be related to the Model 82A1®/M107®, but the M107A1 is far from a simple evolution. Driven by the demands of combat, every component was re-engineered to be lighter yet stronger. The result? A high-performance rifle that weighs four pounds less than the original M107, but is every bit as tough.

Designed to be used with a suppressor, this one-of-a-kind rifle allows you to combine signature reduction capabilities with the flawless reliability of the original Barrett® M107. An all-new bolt carrier group has been designed that is key to making the rifle suppressor-ready. its titanium four-port muzzle brake is engineered to work seamlessly with a quick-attach Barrett .50 BMG Suppressor.

The lightweight aluminum upper receiver features an integrated, rigid 27 MOA optics rail. Inside the upper receiver, the bolt carrier rides on a hardened steel, anti-wear strip for added durability. A thermal-guard cheek piece protects the user’s face from extreme heat or cold.

Advanced design and manufacturing make the M107A1 more precise than ever. The rear-barrel stop and front-barrel bushing are bolted and bonded with a compound similar to that used on space shuttles. A titanium barrel key and fully chrome-lined bore and chamber add to the rifle’s durability.

Enhanced modularity is also a key feature. The rifle’s rail-mounted aluminum rear grip can easily be reconfigured. The newly designed titanium and polymer monopod is easily adjustable from either side.

The M107A1 rifle’s lower receiver includes a new aluminum recoil buffer system that’s optimized for use with a suppressor. The bolt carrier’s components are protected with a mix of ultra-hard PVD coatings and advanced nickel Teflon® plating that increases lubricity, is corrosion-resistant and greatly eases cleaning.

Numbered witness holes on the magazine are just another example of how even the smallest detail makes a powerful difference.

Barrett MRAD (Multi-Role Adaptive Design) Long Range Sniper Rifle

The MRAD (multi-role adaptive design) is a refinement of Barrett's 98B rifle.  It was designed specifically to compete for SOCOM's Precision Sniper Rifle (PSR) program for a long range rifle.
The MRAD is a bolt action rifle and has a monolithic upper receiver of aluminum alloy (7000 series) with a full length picatinny rails on top (21.75 in.) and side and bottom attachment points for user-configurable rails.  It has a folding stock with adjustable length of pull and cheek piece.  The trigger assembly is built in a module and can be removed and replaced without tools.  The bolt-action is self-lubricating and designed to keep the action clean.  The safety/selector can be configure for left or right hand use.   It has a standard 10 round double stacked, detachable magazine and ambidextrous magazine release.

The MRAD is chambered for the .338 Lapua Magnum, with a suppressor-capable match-grade stainless steel barrel which can be removed in the field quickly with a simple tool and configured to other calibers such as the .300 Win. Mag. or 7.62x51mm.  It is designed to shoot at least 1.0 MOA (minute of angle) at 1,500 meters which is a requirement for the PSR.  The MRAD, with the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is able to shoot very, very far.   Kyle Lynch, who has been intimately involved with the development of this rifle, has shot it at 2,340 yds (approx 2,140 meters) with factory ammo, that's an incredible 1.33 miles!  A quantum leap compared to the current military sniper cartridge, the 7.62x51mm, which can be effective at 1,000 yards.

Another critical specification requirement of the PSR is that the weight shall not exceed 18 lbs.  It's a tall order considering the caliber, but the MRAD weights in at 14 lbs. 8 oz., which is a pound lighter than the nearest competitor according to Kyle Lynch.  All in all, the MRAD is a very impressive long range rifle system and I think it stands a very good chance of taking the prize as SOCOM's new PSR.

    Colt Modular Carbine CM901 7.62 x 51mm NATO

In January 31st, 2011 the US Army drafted a request for proposal for the Individual Carbine (IC), a possible replacement for the M-4 carbine now in use.  The goal is to find the best weapon for the best value, which means that they'll look for commercially developed platforms for this process.  It specifies that it must be flexible enough for future "enhancements for accuracy, lethality, reliability, signature suppression, ammunition improvements, maintenance and other weapon/accessory technologies."

With this in mind Colt Defense is debuting the CM901 Colt Modular Carbine, which according to Colt is the "ONLY SYSTEM" to offer a true user-level modularity to go from one caliber to another without tools or for any need to re-zero sights.  This is all done by just swapping uppers in different configurations.  This platform retains all of the familiarity of the old AR/M16 series but with improved ergonomics.

At the heart of the CM901 platform is the lower receiver that accommodates multiple calibers from the 7.62 x 51mm to anything in between the 5.56 x 45mm cartridge by way of a magazine adapter.  It is also compatible with any M4/M16 type upper!  It has several ambidextrous controls, such as the magazine release, bolt hold/release, and fire selector.  Additionally, the buffer tube assembly is compatible with both calibers, and available for customization with aftermarket stocks and pistolgrips common to the AR/M16 family.  The military/law enforcement version is capable of fully automatic fire.

The upper receiver is similar to the 6940/6941 monolithic upper Colt introduced a few years earlier.  It is a one piece monolithic upper with a full length picatinny rail with sides and bottom rails to mount additional accessories.  It also has a brass deflector and bolt-assist.  In addition, it comes standard with an adjustable folding front sight and a MATECH rear back-up iron sight.

The 7.62 x 51mm version is available in 13 or 16 inch barrel and operates in the gas direct impingement system, which according to Colt is as reliable as any piston system.  However, for the 5.56 x 45mm upper we are introduced to the all new Colt APC (Advanced Piston Carbine), which is a proprietary system that is supposed to be superior to other piston based AR's.  The 5.56 x 45mm is available in 10.3, 14.5, or 16 inch barrel.  Other improvements include hardened steel inserts in high wear areas of the aluminum alloy upper receiver.   Also, a new Advanced Bolt material and newly designed extractor and extractor spring to improve the bolt for longevity and reliability.

Well, we've been waiting a long time to see if Colt would ever respond to all those who've been demanding a better M4 Carbine.  And the CM901 is Colt's answer, it's an interesting one: piston and direct-impingement!  Personally, I like it, especially the dark earth anodizing on it, it just looks cool and hip, which is what sells these days.  But aside from that, Colt did a great job with rearranging the controls and putting a system that may just beat the others.  So, is the CM901 revolutionary?  Nah, more like evolutionary, everything feels so familiar; in my book that's good.  Time will tell if it'll make the cut as the next IC.  If not, it'll do well for civilians as Colt will release it by the end of this year with many calibers, including 6.8 SPC.  Job well done Colt!

    Beretta ARX160 Automatic Rifle

When I first saw the Beretta ARX160, I was taken aback, mainly because I didn't know anything about it! And judging by the reaction at this year's SHOT Show most who were there never heard of it either.   But I think the ARX160 has everyone's attention now and with good reasons.
The ARX160 is Beretta's new generation of automatic military rifle and adopted recently with the Italian Armed Forces.   It was developed for the Soldato Futuro (Future Soldier System) program that comprises of an integrated system for the individual soldier. The Beretta ARX160 is one component of many that includes tactical wear, body armor, helmet, communication, command & control and other items.

The ARX160 was designed as a lightweight rifle and is capable of automatic fire. Its notable features are polymer receivers with full length picatinny rails on top, picatinny rails on sides and bottom. It's lubricant-free for reliability in extreme conditions, it has ambidextrous controls, a quick change barrel without tools, and a side-folding and collapsible stock. According to Beretta, it is also easily converted to other calibers such as 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, and 6.8mm SPC. As the video shows, the ARX160 seamlessly integrates all of the little features that experienced operators always want in an individual weapon. For me, it's the little details that won me over, such as the 3 different magazine releases, the ambidextrous bolt catch/release, and most importantly the ease of removing the barrel! So simple, yet it must have taken Beretta countless of engineering hours to make this rifle what it is! According to one of their reps, when it becomes available to civilians (semi-auto version) it'll be priced under $2k!!! I think Beretta's got a winner.

SHF KEG12 Short barrelled 12ga AOW Shotgun

Safety Harbor Firearms' KEG12 is an AOW, or "any other weapon" per B.A.T.F.'s classification, designed for firearms under the NFA (National Firearms Act of 1934) that do not fall into a specific category.  There's a tax stamp of only $5 and it must be legal where the buyer resides (please check your local laws as it varies).  The KEG 12 is made of a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 shotgun.  SHF makes them into 2 barrel sizes, 7 1/4" or 10".  The shorter barrel holds 3 rounds while the 10" holds 4.  According to the president, Walter Keller, these AOW's are improved over the competition and the main difference is that the KEG12's action can be pumped with the forward grip folded.  As of this SHOT Show, it retails for $745 for the Remington and $675 for the Mossberg.  The KEG12 I handled is really compact and it looks like tons of fun at the range.  Maybe someday I'll get to test fire it!  If I do, expect a lengthy review!

    LWRC's SPR, new for 2011

LWRC's SPR, Special Purpose Rifle, is a beauty.  It debuted last SHOT Show as a prototype and is in production this year.  The concept is straight from the big brother the 7.62mm REPR (Rapid Engagement Precision Rifle) but in the smaller 5.56x45mm package.

The SPR is fitted with a cold hammer forged heavy barrel for superior durability and spiral fluting to reduce weight.  The fluting shaves 20% off the barrel's weight and gives it better handling and balances well.  The SPR is customized out of the box.  It comes with the REPR rail system that includes a continuous picatinny rail on top and the sides and bottom are user configurable so you can add rails where you need it.  The charging handle comes standard with the BCMGUNFIGHTER, which is ideal for tactical situations.  The SPR is finished in CERAKOTE for abrasion and corrosion resistance in "Patriot Brown" which adds a handsome combination with Magpul's MIAD pistolgrip and ACS stock in black.

The SPR is a quality rifle and the minute I picked it up it felt solid and well put together.  All the action in the SPR was smooth and buttery.  LWRC did a fine job with it.  For those who are not familiar with LWRC, go check out this rifle, it'll impress you.  It did with me, I know I want one now.

    LWRC's M6A1 SL, new for 2011

The M6A1 SL, in 5.56 x 45mm caliber, is a basic piston rifle.  SL stands for stretched piston system in a lightweight configuration. It has a 14.7" lightweight profile barrel and comes in Magpul's increasingly popular MOE forearm, pistolgrip, and stock.   Like all LWRC's lineup this rifle is built with quality parts and finish.   This rifle is really lightweight at 6.44lbs.    For those who want a KISS piston, this is it!   Prices are not set, but MSRP may be $1600-$1650.

    ATI's AK-47 and Delton Sport

ATI added more rifles to their lineup this year.  First is the SAT-47, an AK-47 style semi-auto rifle with stamped receiver, debuting before their upcoming milled receiver AT-47.   It comes in 7.62x39mm and built with Bulgarian parts.   It's a nice looking rifle and I especially like the wood stock.

Second is the Delton Sport, a lightweight profile M4 style rifle.  It's a base model and comes with basic furniture, that includes a mil-spec buffer tube.  Mil-spec seems to be the theme at this year's SHOT Show, I think manufacturers realize that consumers are more informed than ever.  Another note:  It looks like Delton is moving up and grabbing up more real estate in the AR world, I'm seeing them everywhere, talk about getting crowded, but then again, popularity of AR's is not going down any time soon.

ATI's JUST RIGHT Carbine in 9mm/.40S&W

We've seen what's coming in 2012 at ATI/GSG.  Well, for 2011, they've got the JUST RIGHT (JR) Carbine in 9mm, .40S&W, and soon in .45acp.  The 9mm and .40S&W models will retail for $599, however, the price for the .45acp model is yet to be determined.  The carbine has modern features that make it practical in today's world.  It has 4 sided picatinny rail handguards and many of the components are interchangeable with AR style rifles, such as the pistolgrip and buttstock.  However, the best part of this carbine is that it uses GLOCK magazines!

JR Carbine works on the blowback action, the bolt handle and ejection can be switched to either side of the receiver by the operator for a custom fit.  The barel is of the "Tri-Flatted Barrel Design" which according to the company offers stability and efficient cooling.  In 2010, Officer.com awared it winner of the INNOVATION AWARDS.  It said that it can be easily converted to use other pistol magazines such as Beretta, SIG, XD, and S&W.  It also mentions conversion kits for different calibers including .22LR.

The JUST RIGHT Carbine is built by Just Right Carbines LLC (JRC).  It's a relatively new company that started in 2009, and this is their first product.  The JR Carbine project began in March 2009 with the goal to build a simple, reliable, and flexible carbine using common pistol calibers and magazines.  It took less than a year to go from prototype to production, quite a feat in the firearms industry.

    Technical Specifications:
    • Caliber 9MM, 40S&W and 45ACP
    • Ambidextrous (bolt charging handle and ejector/ejection port)
    • Glock magazine included, easily converts to other popular pistol magazines
    • Simple and reliable blowback operation
    • Lightweight 16 1/4" tri-flatted barrel design for stability and cooling during rapid fire, Tri-flatted barrel made by O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc.
    • Receiver is made of aerospace grade 6061 aluminum
    • Grip and butt stock made of polymer (standard AR15)
    • Utilizes standard M4/AR15 furniture & trigger components
    • Overall length: butt stock extended 33 1/2 inches, collapsed 30 1/4 inches
    • All AR15 accessories are compatible with flat top receiver & quad rail forend
    • Made in U.S.A.

GSG unveils what's up for 2012

GSG is working on several prototypes this year and I was able to interview Brandon Williams of American Tactical Imports (ATI) for some fantastic .22LR WWII replicas in the pipeline.  Drum roll please...the Sturmgewehr StG44 and the MP40 notoriously called the "Schmeisser" (no relation, as it was named by the Allies).  All I can say is AWESOME! AWESOME! and AWESOME!  I stumbled on it as I was walking around at the SHOT Show.  At first, I thought they were airsoft models, but when I read the caption it said .22LR.  Although in prototype form, they were really nice, and the Schmeisser felt pretty hefty.  As of this writing they are non-working replicas, but the folks at ATI decided to show it to the world, how brilliant is that!  Let's hope they have smooth sailing bringing them to us.  Keep them in your prayers!

Also, for 2012 or sooner, is the .22LR conversion kit for the Glock.  It is still a work in progress so not much is known on when and at what price.  However, they are doing their best to bring it to us.  again stay tuned for more info.   Enjoy the teaser!
